Venetian floors are buzzing with early morning excitement as people are starting to flock into the halls, registering and getting their badges. Today is Social Media Jungle day hosted by Jeff Pulver and offering no less then 16 speakers, each passionately speaking about different elements and aspects of Social Media, including:
- Social media through devices
- Social media and consumer electronics
- Principles of social media
- Monetization and ROI
- Future of social media
Twitter, the new new-media darling, was used as an example by almost ALL presenters.
To kick off social media jungle day, we networked around the room equipped with a badge of our name, with room for ‘status line’ we had to put in, and empty stickers we used to ‘tag’ people we met around the room. Obviously a room full of social media nuts that can interact in the real world only by leveraging online behavior!
Jeff Pulver opened the session and Chris Brogan followed talking about navigating in the sea of social media networks and communities. If last year’s Social Media talk was about ‘it’s new and cool and happening’, this year the theme, which was the key message at Brogan’s session: ‘it is not about knowing it is there, we all know about LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, it is about doing something cool with it’.
That was his key message which resonated with all other speakers. We all know Facebook is the new google, and that twitter is the new cool place to be in – but how are we using these tools in a meaningful way for ourselves/our business? Also, putting your product/brand/organization on Twitter/Facebook/MySpace with no real goal and startegy won’t work – there is no blanket solution.
I won’t make this a mile long post. I have divided the different speaker’s notes and conclusions under a couple of categories. But before proceeding to that, some exciting news from today’s CE focused sessions:
* Viera Cast – Panasonic’s TV with ‘IPTV’ technology, offering partnership with Amazon
* Cisco offers Social Media tools http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10133792-93.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20
* Microsoft finally doing something with Facebook – FB will interface Windows Live.
Social Media is not only taking an important place in the conference, it is literally embedded into each and every product.
