Interesting article about the approach ITtoolbox is taking to introduce a social network to allow vendor selection. The idea of combining information from both the vendor and user-generated content to improve an online community makes a lot of sense. I think this type of “Content Rich Professional Networking” will be the way to apply social networking technology — which has mostly been successful so far helping with job searches and social interactions — to business applications.

Content is definitely key to helping online communities have real value. It can often work better if the content is first and the online community follows in incremental steps. The natural way most people approach networking online is to be a viewer first then move on to some minor participation. If there is no content then it’s hard to have viewers so the process can get stalled before it gets started.
